A Nutritionist's Mini-Lesson on Lowering Blood Pressure and Reducing Edema: Understanding Edema and Dietary Therapy
Nutritionist's Mini-Lesson on Lowering Blood Pressure and Reducing Edema
Swelling is a problem for many people. Some people wake up to find their eyes puffy, and no amount of makeup can cover it up. Others find their shoes too small and their feet feel tight after a long day at work. These problems are caused by water retention.
What exactly causes edema? Edema refers to the excessive accumulation of fluid in the interstitial spaces outside blood vessels. Based on its severity, edema is classified into four grades:
Possible causes of edema
Grade 1 edema involves soft skin that quickly springs back when pressed. The swelling is infrequent, occurring less than three times a week, and may be due to overeating at a particular meal.
(Lower limb edema) Excess sodium causes temporary water retention, which can be relieved by a low-salt diet.
Grade 2 edema involves slightly taut skin; pressing on the skin leaves an indentation of about 0.5 cm that takes approximately 10-20 seconds. Edema typically occurs in the lower limbs during the afternoon, usually due to prolonged sitting or standing.
(Lower limb edema) can rebound. Suitable for those with poor metabolism or varicose veins.
Grade 3 edema is visibly swollen; pressing on the skin can leave an indentation of more than 0.5 cm. Poor skin metabolism causes frequent edema, which not only occurs in the lower limbs but also in the face and arms.
(Swelling of the face, hands, and lower limbs) The indentation takes about 1 minute to recover. Swelling also occurs in all areas.
People of this type often have a strong preference for heavy flavors in their diet, and may even suffer from obesity, fatty liver, proteinuria, heart disease, and other ailments.
Grade 4 edema presents with very obvious swelling; pressing on the skin can leave an indentation of 1 cm or more. This indicates problems with the liver, kidneys, and heart, leading to an inability to metabolize water, and further complications.
(Generalized edema) can persist for a long time without returning to its original state. Toxins cannot be eliminated.
How can we relieve edema through diet? People prone to edema should eat a light, low-salt diet, consume more calcium-rich foods, and ensure they get enough high-quality protein for normal metabolism.
Popular Special Meals & Dim Sum
Desserts are usually made with a lot of sugar, cream and other ingredients. However, when we reduce the amount of sugar or cream, some desserts become less delicious.
Actually, we can make healthy desserts that don't lose their flavor by using the unique sweetness and aroma of seasonal fruits, and then pairing them with low-fat dairy products and agar!
Popular Special Meal - Limited to 350 calories
When we don't have time to cook two or three side dishes, we can also make up for the lack of food intake by pairing a moderate amount of staple food with high-fiber main dishes. This way, we can make up for the lack of food intake at once, increase the amount of vegetables, and not only feel full, but also get the minerals and vitamins we need! Add a piece of fruit, and you'll have enough calories for a meal!
